Welcome to the second Generation Q episode of “To L and Back”! In case you missed our first episode that dropped last Thursday, I’ll be taking over hosting duties with fellow gay and proud member of Generation Q, Analyssa Lopez! Analyssa is a self-appointed “pop culture lesbian” working in television as a creative executive whose interests include tv criticism, celesbian gossip, and crossword puzzles.
Last week we checked in on our old favorites (Bette Porter isn’t cheating, but is simply the person someone else cheated with? I’d call that growth!) and met TWO new generations of queers! This week we’re joined by noted L Word scholar, regular To L and Back co-host, Editor-In-Chief, CEO, CFO, and Co-Founder of this website, and person whose living room we record in each week: Riese Bernard!
Listen as we learn more about Alice and Nat’s past, meet Sophie’s family, and watch Micah use a gift card and have sex! It’s a big night for Micah!
Do we discuss issues of representation around trans lesbians, trans sex, and Latinx families? Yes. Do we discuss high-waisted pants and threesomes? Also yes. Just like the Alice show we do it all!
My Notes (for 101 and 102):
+ Watch Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne fall in love
+ The bartender here finally broke up with her boyfriend and probably wants her bike back!!
+ You can now watch Adam for yourself. I can’t promise you’ll love it, but I can promise you’ll love Leo Sheng!
+ The Trans Symposium on Lisa that I shamelessly plugged: The L Word’s Lisa The Lesbian-Identified Man: A Trans Symposium
+ Riese’s 102 recap that she came on the show to promote
+ You can now watch original L Word pilot director Rose Troche’s indie debut Go Fish for free here
+ Los Angeles queer dance party Gay Asstrology
+ Even The New Yorker is writing about high-waisted pants!
+ Check out this article about Judy Chicago’s The Dinner Party
+ When was the last time you watched the Bette/Candace jail scene?
+ We still don’t know if Jillian Mercado’s character is queer but she is!
+ Janet Mock on why she started #GirlsLikeUs
+ Read this great piece from Mey Rude about The L Word‘s exclusion of trans women
+ If you have HBO Go you can watch Snow Angels, the movie where I fell in love with Olivia Thirlby. But WARNING it’s depressing and I haven’t seen it since 2009 so who knows!
+ Preview clip of Friday Chamberlain in Bit
+ Alix Olson, the poet Micah reads at the engagement party
