Oh hey, I just realized that this month (January 2023) will mark my three year anniversary of taking over this twice-a-week news roundup! Time flies.
Miley Cyrus Announces New Album Endless Summer Vacation, ok but wait! Hear me out! After her recent NYE concert clips that circled all week online? And that recent Dazed feature about how Miley’s dressing like the rich divorced bisexual we always knew she’d be? I dunno, maybe I’m craving a specific kind of chaos. But I could kinda get into a new Miley album. (shhh! I can’t remember where we stand on Miley Cyrus DiscorseTM as an internet community right now, so that’s our little secret!)

And so I present you with this interview of her, by Rachel Handler for Vulture, from the American Girl Doll Café, in honor of her new doll-horror movie M3gan: Allison Williams Comes Alive. Enjoy! 🎀

I was a big Disney Channel kid. Honestly, even now as I write this, I am listening to Olivia Rodrigo, so in many ways I am still a (gay) Disney Channel kid. And when I came out at the ripe old age of 20, I was embarrassed that while my queer peers had spent their teen years watching edgier, queerer content like Degrassi, South of Nowhere or even The L Word itself, I had been deeply invested in the unfolding drama between Demi Lovato, Miley Cyrus, and Selena Gomez taking place largely via YouTube and graphic tees.
We’ve talked about how instrumental the Disney Channel Original Movie was to our sexualities and which DCOMs are the gayest, but actual queer women are virtually nonexistent on the Disney Channel. (It’s only been in the last few years that someone came out or two boys kissed in live-action programming on the network). Queer women in Disney projects appear more frequently as animated characters: the first bisexual character on the Channel, but also as a split-second appearance of a couple in Finding Dory or a one-eyed cop.
But while the Disney Channel may not be known for its gay characters, one thing it is known for is launching the careers of some of today’s biggest stars. And not for nothing, a lot of those stars have turned out to be extremely queer! Luckily for today’s teens, more and more of these stars are coming out (or dispensing of the idea of “coming out” as any specific label) while they are on the Disney Channel, making it much easier to be a queer Disney kid these days — and maybe saving them from sharing my experience of being self-conscious at queer parties a decade from now.

Despite having come out to her parents in the sixth grade and despite having truly one of the gayest haircuts ever seen on TV (and certainly the gayest haircut ever seen on the Disney Channel), Hayley Kiyoko was not, as far as I can tell, publicly out while on Disney Channel (she came out in 2016, in an essay about the Girls Like Girls video).
Before she was known as Lesbian Jesus, she was playing a troublemaking wizard (gay) in a small arc on Wizards of Waverly Place and played Stella, the lead guitarist (gay) in the titular band of the DCOM Lemonade Mouth.

First let’s give it up for one of the hardest working homos on this list, because Raven was truly everywhere on this channel. Despite Raven herself coming out in 2013 and getting married last year, we recently learned that the character of Raven has not and never will identify as queer, not even in the reboot.
I find that just a little hard to believe because babes, the fashion on That’s So Raven? Setting aside the fact that it would absolutely destroy on TikTok right now, it’s all just so gay. The patterns, the textures, the accessories — a maximalist femme dream playing out before my 12-year-old eyes every week.

Miley Cyrus was at the center of much Disney Channel celebrity gossip in my day, from her feud with Demi Lovato to her role as one of the founding members of the Jonas Brothers Ex-Girlfriend Club (many members of which appear on this list, just…saying…)
Though the gayest character on Hannah Montana, the show that made Miley mega-famous, was obviously Miley’s bff Lily (homegirl wore combat boots to the beach, like, as a standard), Miley herself came out as not heterosexual and then as pansexual in 2015, though she got an equality tattoo in 2012 (as is legally required of all good allies!). She’s been a culture vulture and made some deeply… questionable comments about sexuality, while also continuing to deliver gossip-worthy activity, like her parking lot kisses with noted Kristen-Stewart-ex Stella Maxwell and starring in this Kaitlynn Carter essay following their much-discussed yacht trip and subsequent breakup. As of last year, she seems to ID as “gay as fuck.”

Demi starred in Sonny With a Chance and, of course, ran vocal circles around The Jonas Brothers in Camp Rock, bringing the choppy bang mainstream in a spiritual predecessor to the shaggy cut that is currently in favor with white queers today! Despite playing Santana’s love interest on Glee in 2014, releasing the gayest song ever written “Cool for the Summer” in 2015, and making various comments about sexual fluidity and experimentation throughout the years, Lovato didn’t officially come out until 2017 as pansexual (thank you to Stef Schwartz for her intrepid reporting on this matter), and this year as non-binary.

The red-carpet host of this year’s Met Gala? The lead of Disney Channel Original Movie Jump In!? Sexually fluid and making the rules for herself? Baby, that’s Keke Palmer! Ultimately, Nickelodeon was the network that gave her a series (True Jackson, VP), but the DCOMs do not lie.
Right photo by James Gourley/Getty Images
Another one and done DCOM star, Lindsay Lohan was the (impeccably dressed) lead in Get a Clue. I assume everyone knows that she dated Samantha Ronson, but her long and famous feud with Hilary Duff (over, of all people, Aaron Carter) has firmly entrenched her in The Extended Disney Channel Gay Chart!
Right photo by Gotham/GC Images
Dove made comments about being queer before her official coming out as bisexual on Instagram Live, which she discussed with Gay Magazine this year! She’s claimed that all of her Disney Channel characters (TV star Liv and overachieving basketball player Maddie – the twin sisters she played on her show, and Mal in the Descendants franchise) have been queer, and yes, she reads fanfiction of her and Sofia Carson’s characters in Descendants, Mal and Evie (the daughters of Disney villains Maleficent and The Evil Queen).
https://twitter.com/marcieinorbit/status/1443214104009838598?s=20
While Dove’s co-star Sofia Carson isn’t officially out, she also ships Malevie (though she prefers #Mevie) and thinks Janelle Monae in a rainbow dress is a “mood” to which I say, same.
Photo via Josie Totah on Instagram
Josie Totah never led a Disney Channel show, but had arcs in both Jessie and Liv & Maddie and was on Glee, which you know is sort of in the same emotional universe as many Disney Channel shows (if we’re all being honest with ourselves!).
She came out in 2018, has appeared in the reboot of iCarly and the reboot of Saved by the Bell, both of which we also loved for making our childhoods even gayer, and is pretty consistently putting us to shame on Instagram.
Right photo by Matt Winkelmeyer/VF20/WireImag
Rowan Blanchard publicly came out as queer at the age of 14 while she was the star of her show, the updated-for-the-millennium reboot of Boy Meets World, making her, I think, the only lead of a show to be out while starring on the channel.
Right photo by Marco Piraccini/Archivio Marco Piraccini/Mondadori Portfolio via Getty Images
After leaving Shake It Up, the dance-themed show she starred in with Zendaya, Bella followed in the Miley Cyrus footsteps of quickly shedding her child star image and becoming mired in controversy. She came out as pansexual, very publicly dated (and shared a lot of post-breakup Twitter drama with) Tana Mongeau (and MOD SUN, a musician I simply refuse to know anything about), and pulled that OnlyFans stunt.
Right photo by Emma McIntyre/Getty Images for Alo Yoga
Perhaps better known for dancing in Missy Elliott music videos, Alyson has been in a whole host of Disney Channel projects, as well as the actual host of a weird interstitial show on Disney Channel called Mike’s Super Short Show. Honestly, many of her roles pinged queer for me, but she came out in 2018, then made this absolutely perfect shirt, and now has a gay ol’ time on TikTok.
When I tell you that I would happily and cheerfully sit through commercial breaks as a child hoping for Mike’s Super Short Show to come on, I hope you understand why. I finally do!

Julia Lester stars in the newest entry into the High School Musical franchise, and loves hanging out with this pansexual flag. (And though the show technically airs on Disney+, I’m counting her as a Disney Channel star because back in my day that was where High School Musical content aired!)
https://www.instagram.com/p/CCEVplnAYbF/
Fellow HSM stars Joshua Bassett, Larry Saperstein, and cute IRL couple Joe Serafini and Frankie A. Rodriguez all identify under the LGBTQ+ umbrella, meaning the majority of the teen cast of that show identifies as queer, finally representing theater kids the way we should always be represented.
Right photo by Rodin Eckenroth/WireImage
The former cast member of Teen Beach Movie and contestant on So You Think You Can Dance (another of my high school obsessions) got married in 2017, and talked to The Advocate in 2019 about having to come out before she got married. Tangentially, SYTCYD contestants often end up on Dancing with the Stars these days, which this season of course features another former child-star JoJo Siwa in the show’s first-ever same-gender couple!
The extremely talented Auli’i Cravalho, who voiced Moana, came out as bisexual! Casually, over TikTok, as the teens do.
I’d be remiss not to mention Selena Gomez (another noted Jonas Brother ex-girlfriend), who not only – as Mey Rude said in this round up of gay pop songs from 2017 — “plays gay real well” but who is also very close friends with Julia Michaels — close enough friends to kiss onstage, and get matching tattoos offstage. Kacey Musgraves wisely once said “follow your arrow wherever it points” and Selena says hers forever points to Julia’s? Hm.
At press time, Zendaya, wearer of incredible suits, is not officially out as any specific label, but we remain hopeful.
My darlings, what a week for queer celebrity news! First of all: an anonymous tipster has brought to my attention a Hollywood rumor that Kristen Stewart and Stella Maxwell are not actually back together; in fact Kristen is rumored to be [ALLEGEDLY] dating yet another civilian. This [MAYBE] new paramour is reported to be screenwriter Dylan Meyer, who cursory googles reveal has sported an impressive side shave and looks like she might enjoy sulking whilst getting coffee at Go Get ‘Em Tiger in Los Feliz. We will report back as updates become available.
In other news, this bombshell:

There is no part of me that thinks Miley’s sexuality has anything to do with the dissolution of Miley’s marriage (Blind Gossip has a much more plausible theory, though I also find the implication that Miley was too ‘wild’ insulting), but I do appreciate Miley and her gal pal’s special method of bonding through the tough times! This tweet sparked an intense thread about all the places we queer women have chosen to mourn our husbands; I personally have mourned many of mine in several East Village bar bathrooms and on the dance floor at Klub Deer at A-Camp. Personally, as much as I love romantically mourning my husband in the comforts of my own home, I’ve always fantasized about mourning my husband on the Wonder Wheel at Coney Island.
With that being said, let’s all mourn our husbands!

Kehlani remains willing to sub for Megan Thee Stallion, so I’m not sure she’s mourning her husband all that much here. Actually, the revelation that Kehlani is a huge fan of my favorite MTV reality show Are You The One? made my entire week. Not only that, her opinions about the show are spot on!

Last night, the baddest bitches went to the Metropolitan art museum in their baddest bitch clothes. This year’s Met Gala was arranged by Anna Wintour and was hosted by Lady Gaga, Serena Williams, and Harry Styles. Lena Waithe also sat on the planning committee.
As a whole, people didn’t read the essay and had no clue what “camp” was. There were lots of earnest trials and failures, however, and I think that’s the embodiment of camp! Straight people failing at camp is campier than I could’ve hoped for, friends. So overall, I’d say it was a success. Here are my favorite looks paired with my favorite sentences from Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay, “Notes on Camp.”
Also, Ciara and Big Freedia did…this together. It’s so campy I could quote the whole essay under it, so instead, here it is without commentary:
“The whole point of Camp is to dethrone the serious.”
https://www.instagram.com/p/BxIxp8zBW7A/
“So, not all homosexuals have Camp taste. But homosexuals, by and large, constitute the vanguard — and the most articulate audience — of Camp.”
https://www.instagram.com/p/BxJQjb_nHsU/
“For Camp art is often decorative art, emphasizing texture, sensuous surface, and style at the expense of content.”
“To perceive Camp in objects and persons is to understand Being-as-Playing-a-Role.”
“That way, the way of Camp, is not in terms of beauty, but in terms of the degree of artifice, of stylization.”
“Camp is art that proposes itself seriously, but cannot be taken altogether seriously because it is ‘too much.'”
“Camp is a woman walking around in a dress made of three million feathers.”
“Without passion, one gets pseudo-Camp — what is merely decorative, safe, in a word, chic.”
“The hallmark of Camp is the spirit of extravagance.”
“Camp is the answer to the problem: how to be a dandy in the age of mass culture.”
“One is drawn to Camp when one realizes that “sincerity” is not enough.”
“Camp taste is, above all, a mode of enjoyment, of appreciation – not judgment.”
“Camp is the triumph of the epicene style.”
“Camp responds particularly to the markedly attenuated and to the strongly exaggerated.”
“To camp is a mode of seduction — one which employs flamboyant mannerisms susceptible of a double interpretation; gestures full of duplicity, with a witty meaning for cognoscenti and another, more impersonal, for outsiders.”
https://www.instagram.com/p/BxJBnd0gg7U/
“Camp involves a new, more complex relation to “the serious.” One can be serious about the frivolous, frivolous about the serious.”
https://www.instagram.com/p/BxJEp9tB6rH/
“The Camp sensibility is disengaged, depoliticized — or at least apolitical.”
“Camp… makes no distinction between the unique object and the mass-produced object.”
https://www.instagram.com/p/BxJAAqKHB4p/
“Camp is a solvent of morality. It neutralizes moral indignation, sponsors playfulness.”
“It seems unlikely that much of the traditional opera repertoire could be such satisfying Camp if the melodramatic absurdities of most opera plots had not been taken seriously by their composers. One doesn’t need to know the artist’s private intentions. The work tells all.”
“What the Camp eye appreciates is the unity, the force of the person.”

“All Camp objects, and persons, contain a large element of artifice.”

“Many examples of Camp are things which, from a “serious” point of view, are either bad art or kitsch.”

“…In their relative unpretentiousness and vulgarity, they are more extreme and irresponsible in their fantasy – and therefore touching and quite enjoyable.”
https://www.instagram.com/p/BxJCjgUhhT5/
“Camp is as well a quality discoverable in objects and the behavior of persons.”
“Camp is either completely naive or else wholly conscious.”
“Camp taste nourishes itself on the love that has gone into certain objects and personal style.”
“It incarnates a victory of “style” over “content,” “aesthetics” over “morality,” of irony over tragedy.”
“The androgyne is certainly one of the great images of Camp sensibility.”
“Style is everything.”
“There is seriousness in Camp… But there is never, never tragedy.”
https://www.instagram.com/p/BxJXQJXjFEI/
“There is a sense in which it is correct to say: “It’s too good to be Camp.” Or “too important,” not marginal enough.”
“Camp refuses both the harmonies of traditional seriousness, and the risks of fully identifying with extreme states of feeling.”
https://twitter.com/ohmazerunner/status/1125561095207444480
“[Camp]…is not a natural mode of sensibility, if there be any such.”
“Some art which can be approached as Camp… merits the most serious admiration and study.”
https://www.instagram.com/p/BxJYnOynFay/
“Camp asserts that good taste is not simply good taste; that there exists, indeed, a good taste of bad taste.”
“Camp taste transcends the nausea of the replica.”
“Camp introduces a new standard: artifice as an ideal, theatricality.”
“Pure Camp is always naive. Camp which knows itself to be Camp (“camping”) is usually less satisfying.”
“If tragedy is an experience of hyperinvolvement, comedy is an experience of underinvolvement, of detachment.”
“The new-style dandy, the lover of Camp, appreciates vulgarity.”
“Camp proposes a comic vision of the world.”
“Camp taste identifies with what it is enjoying.”
“[Camp] is the love of the exaggerated, the “off,” of things-being-what-they-are-not.”
“The relation of Camp taste to the past is extremely sentimental.”
“So many of the objects prized by Camp taste are old-fashioned, out-of-date, démodé.”
“But since no authentic aristocrats in the old sense exist today to sponsor special tastes, who is the bearer of this taste? Answer: an improvised self-elected class, mainly homosexuals, who constitute themselves as aristocrats of taste.”
“Time liberates the work of art from moral relevance, delivering it over to the Camp sensibility.
“Camp is a tender feeling.”
“Things are campy, not when they become old – but when we become less involved in them, and can enjoy, instead of be frustrated by, the failure of the attempt”
“Successful Camp… even when it reveals self-parody, reeks of self-love.”

“…The Camp sensibility is one that is alive to a double sense in which some things can be taken.”
“And Camp is esoteric — something of a private code, a badge of identity even, among small urban cliques.”
In the fashion industry, the first Monday in May is its own kind of holiday.
The Met Gala (formerly known as the The Costume Institute Gala, and informally known to me as “your favorite celebrity’s favorite red carpet”) is a fundraiser, co-sponsored by Anna Wintour and Vogue, supporting the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Costume Institute in New York City. It’s also the soft launch of the Metropolitan Museum’s annual summer fashion exhibit. An unabashed love letter to the craft and art of fashion, the night’s red carpet is more iconic than the gala itself.
Designers invite celebrities as their guests to wear masterfully constructed, and often avant-garde, “costumes” based on a central theme. This year’s theme, “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” gave a me a bit of pause. Little did I know that 20GayTeen would once again work it’s magic when I least expected it!
Eleven out queer women and non-binary folks walked the carpet last night, more than any previous record. We have all of those looks for you here! We also included a few special extras that we didn’t want you to miss.
Grab a quick mid-afternoon lemonade and enjoy!
Is there anyone else we would have started with? As a black masculine-of-center lesbian, Lena Waithe was already going to make an impact in her Met Gala debut just for walking the carpet in her signature well tailored suit and perfectly beat face. She took it further. She made sure that we were in the room, and that everyone would know it. Lena always puts her community on her back, this time literally, and we can’t help but love those who are out there loving us so openly.
To really take in the weight of this costume choice, we can’t forget that the theme of last night’s gala — “Fashion and the Catholic Imagination”. It was criticized by many for being insensitive to the history of the church’s relationship with homophobia, sexual abuse, and racism. Lena turned her red carpet moment into a statement of defiant pride, solidarity, and visibility.
A real life black lesbian superhero.
Seriously, what did we do to deserve her? What a time to be alive. Waithe also took time on the carpet to talk with Vogue about the significance of her fashion choice, including the decision to include black and brown (representing people of color) with the Pride flag rainbow.

Janelle Monáe returned to her iconic black & white aesthetic, using the gold brim of her hat to play on the event’s theme — it’s meant to cast a “halo” framing her face. It’s been a while since Monáe brought back the black & white uniform of her early career, but as she reminded Vanity Fair last night, “My black and white is meant to honor my working-class parents. My mother was a janitor, both my fathers, my biological father and my stepfather, were custodians, sanitation workers, post-office workers.” They wore uniforms everyday. It wasn’t about what they were wearing, but who they were.
Miley, along with Autostraddle “Vapid Fluff” regular Paris Jackson and Stella McCartney, who dressed both women, talked about the future possibilities of sustainable fashion and the environment.

For all of its moves towards inclusivity in recent years, the Met Gala is severely lacking when it comes to body diversity. At least Ashley Graham was there to represent — and damn does she look great! Still, it’s far from being enough. As we take in all the drama and beauty, let’s also keep pushing for more of us to be seen each year.

Welcome back to No Filter, where dreams come true and everybody’s pets are cuter than everything else on the whole internet. This was a big week for Kristen Stewart and Soko, so we’re talking about them in a separate post – this is just to discuss those famous queers who feel the need to express themselves solely through the power of Instagram. Sometimes there’s just too much going on in the world of homo tabloid journalism, and the only way we can really keep track of it is to focus our energy on carefully curated photos of Sara Quin’s cats. Without further ado, here are the most pressing issues of the day:
When the cutest part of the picture isn’t even Samira Wiley or Lauren’s sentiment but is actually the contented expression on the dog’s face, that’s pretty impressive.

I don’t know how I feel about Kreayshawn’s haircut, it’s giving me ‘your elementary school friend’s mom who always made your sandwiches weird’ vibes.
Join us next week, when Brittani Nichols busts Tegan and Sara for adorable cat fraud.
Another year, another batch of newly-minted queers helping the world gradually understand that it’s only a matter of time before everybody is gay. That’s right: everybody.
This year’s coming out stories happened with much less fanfare than in years past, and a majority of the people on this list didn’t even make an official coming out statement, they just casually entered into a public same-sex relationship and waited for the world to notice. We’ve also finally gotten to a place in Hollywood, at least, where calling a spade a spade (e.g., acknowledging a same-sex relationship exists just as easily as we would an opposite-sex relationship) isn’t considered defamatory enough to warrant outrage.
Oddly, some of this year’s biggest coming out stories came from people who the community-at-large has very mixed feelings about — a pop star with a rocky history of racial appropriation and disregard, a reality TV star who rose to fame by placing her infant daughter in child beauty pageants, and a transgender woman who endorses a political party that advocates against her community’s best interests (amongst other sins).
Without any further ado, here are the 21 women and one gender-fluid person who came out in 2015!
Allyne identified as straight when she met Tig Notaro on the set of In a World. But as they described in the documentary Tig, which came out in July, what developed between them transcended Allynne’s prior conception of her own sexual orientation. Although their relationship wasn’t a secret, it became common knowledge on January 1st, when Notaro announced that the pair had been engaged for 53 minutes and so far, it was going very well. Allyne is a member of the Los Angeles Upright Citizens Brigade and an experienced comedian who has appeared on shows including Comedy Bang Bang, 2 Broke Girls, The Mindy Project, Key & Peele, Maron, and Kroll Show.
Although rumors about supermodel and actress Patricia Velásquez had been swirling since her relationship with Sandra Bernhard in the early ’90s, the woman considered by many to be “the first Latina supermodel” made it official in February with the release of her memoir, Straight Walk.
She made you swoon playing gay babe Betty McRae in Bomb Girls, and then she made you swoon playing another gay babe in Lost Girl… and THEN she made you swoon again this year when she went public with her relationship with her girlfriend Charlie. Interestingly, she also appeared briefly in The L Word, as did the aforementioned Patricia Velásquez.

This past February, Ashley Nicolette Frangipane, known as “Halsey” to her fans, identified herself as a mixed race bisexual woman on Twitter. Frangipane has also been open about her diagnosis of bipolar disorder, describing herself in an interview with Billboard magazine as an “unconventional child” and an “inconvenient woman.”
Ruby Tandoh made it to the final round of The Great British Bake-Off, writes about food for The Guardian and, in April, came out as a very funny gay lady.
Atlanta Dream hoopster McCoughtry came out on Instagram, sharing a photograph of herself and her fiancée, declaring, “I understand we all judge and its in human nature, but the more i speak to God i never feel judgement front he man upstairs, even tho he has all the power too! He tells me to fall, learn, and grow because thats life. But to always keep my heart pure and believe totally in him. All i know love is a great feeling and GOD is Love.”
Fisher, an elite ice hockey goalie for Canada, was already out in her private life, but spoke openly about her lesbian identity for the first time at the Canadian Olympic Committee’s #OneTeam round table. “There’s this assumption that it’s not necessary for women in sports in particular to come out publicly,” she said. “It’s failing to understand the importance of having the conversation and being in that place. I came through in a generation when the transition of being gay was just supposed to happen quietly. I started a relationship with a woman and it just wasn’t talked about. Only in having conversations with people have I realized the need for me to talk about this.”
Fuzzy Agolley, an Australian TV personality who co-hosts The Voice Australia and co-hosted Video Hits for five years, came out on her blog in celebration of her 31st birthday. “As black as my skin, as Chinese as my blood, and as Australian and British are my nationalities, I’m also a proud Gay Woman,” she wrote. “Most importantly though, I’m a happy human being.”
Pumpkin and her mother, Mama June, of the TV show Here Comes Honey Boo-Boo, came out as bisexual on Inside Edition this past April.

This was the big coming out story of 2015 — the Olympic hero, lifelong Republican, reality television star and lapsed member of the Kardashian clan came out as transgender on Diane Sawyer after decades of speculation.
As the vote on marriage equality in Ireland drew closer, 55-year-old prominent broadcast journalist Ursula Halligan came out publicly in an op-ed. She called on religious communities to support the measure and shed light on how homophobia had impacted her.
Although the headline of this article indicates that this is a list of “women,” Miley Cyrus does not identify as a woman; she identifies as gender-fluid.
In a series of interviews and announcements beginning in May 2015, problematic pop star Miley Cyrus came out as pansexual and genderfluid, and revealed that she’d come out to her mother as bisexual at the age of 14. She recalled being the go-to hookup for other “sexually curious” girls as a teenager and having prior relationships with women. Although she’s lately been more interested in relationships with women or non-binary folks, she told TIME Magazine that “If I end up in a straight relationship, that’s fine — but I’m not going to be with f—ing slob guys who are watching porn, making all their girls feel ugly.”
Tatum O’Neal, the youngest actress to ever win an Academy Award (in 1974, for Paper Moon), told People magazine that she’s loving the ladies these days, saying that “I like women. I definitely have been dating mostly women recently.” Regarding her sexuality, O’Neal says, “I’m not one or the other.” Since that time, rumors have swirled regarding her alleged relationship with lesbian pioneer Rosie O’Donnell.
In a speech for the Trevor Project Live in June, Rosie Perez revealed that she had a lesbian relationship in junior high school, which makes her luckier than most of us. “All I wanted to do was hump her. And I suppressed the urge and suppressed the urge and suppressed the urge until Michelle one day started humping on me.” Perez says she is not “lesbian, gay or whatever” but rather “quasi-straight,” and that she wishes she’d had somebody to talk to during her relationship with Michelle: “If I had other people, specifically adults, if I was just able to call up and they said, ‘Oh, I humped the Michelle-type person, too. You’re normal, don’t worry.”
The Julliard graduate and Orange is the New Black star was open about her relationship with filmmaker Nneka Onuorah, which ended mid-year. Does she like girls forever? Will she date another girl? Will that girl be you? Maybe, maybe not! We’ll see!
YouTube star Ingrid Nilsen came out in — where else? — a tearjerking YouTube video in which she talks about struggling with her sexuality growing up in an enivronment where it wasn’t okay to be gay. The community met her with open arms, as did fellow queer YouTuber Hannah Hart, who is now Ingrid’s girlfriend!
In an interview at The World Cup, 24-year-old soccer player Ramona Bachmann told Swiss Publicaiton Blick, “I’m very open. I do not care if someone is with a man or a woman. In Sweden we deal with this issue fortunately also very open and easy.” She also revealed that she is currently in a lesbian relationship with a 21-year-old student named Camille Lara, who she frequently featured on her instagram account.
World champion powerlifter Janae Marie Kroc came out as a “Transgender/genderfluid Alpha male/girly girl Lesbian in a male body” in July.
Broody lesbian crush object Kristen Stewart became the first celebrity in coming out history to be outed by her mother, in June, but the actress didn’t more-or-less publicly confirm her mother’s claim until a Nylon Magazine interview in August. After having her sexual orientation be a subject of speculation for basically her entire career, the revelation barely made a splash. Stewart herself downplayed its importance in a statement reflective of a growing acceptance in Hollywood (while ignorant of a lack of acceptance elsewhere), stating, “I think in three or four years, there are going to be a whole lot more people who don’t think it’s necessary to figure out if you’re gay or straight. It’s like, just do your thing.”
The 16-year-old French-American actress and model, the daughter of Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis, appeared in i0 Tillett Wright’s “Self Evident Truths” project, a “a photographic document of 10000 people in the USA that identify as ANYTHING OTHER than 100% straight.”
Although Taylor was not, to the best of our awareness (which is pretty aware!), an out lesbian, she said she’d always “lived out” in an interview with WYNC for a podcast this past November. But now that she’s fallen madly in love with Sarah Paulson (it happens), the truth is definitely out for real — Taylor, at the age of 72, is a lady-loving lady.

Although Soloway has long been immersed in the queer community and has a transgender parent and a lesbian sister, she told The Advocate in 2014 that she still identified as straight (although that may be changing). In a profile published in The New Yorker this winter, Soloway went public about falling in love with somebody I have also been in love with for quite some time: poet and author Eileen Myles. Mazel tov!
This is a late-add to the list, as the actress/singer revealed to People Magazine on Deember 16th that she does not want to label her sexuality, which means she’s not straight! Hurrah! The revelation came after rumors related to her lesbilicious music video with Cassie and snapchat photos of her and Cassie kissing. MERRY CHRISTMAS, WORLD!
Autostraddle’s Pop Culture Fix is a weekly round-up of the queer arts and entertainment news you need in your life.
+ Yesterday morning, the planets and stars aligned to create a gorgeous, significant moment in queer pop culture when both Laverne Cox and Lily Tomlin appeared on Good Morning America to talk to Robin Roberts about their new film, Grandma. It will be released in New York and Los Angeles on Friday and seems destined to grant Tomlin the Academy Award that has long eluded her.

You want to know something that’s always so weird/gross when other people do it but is frikkin adorable when Lily Tomlin and Jane Wagner do it? Share social media. Also, Dolly Parton says she wants to hang out with her 9-to-5 co-stars on Grace and Frankie, so get on that, gracious goddesses of pop culture. (Please.)
+ In the wise and eternal words of The Backstreet Boys, Cate Blanchett needs to quit playing games with my heart. First, she’s had many relationships with women. But then wait, no, she has not had many relationships with women. And now she is having an on-screen relationship with Rooney Mara in the first trailer for Todd Haynes’ Carol and my swooning has reached peak levels. As you know, Carol is based on Patricia Highsmith’s 1952 lesbian pulp novel, The Price of Salt, in which Carol falls in love with a department store clerk even though she’s married (to a really boring, really rich guy, played by Coach Eric Taylor in this movie). As you also know, Cate Blanchett + period drama + lesbianism = The Ultimate Oscars bait.
+ The Teen Choice Awards happened this week. That is a thing where teenagers use social media to vote for their favorite things and the winners receive surfboards. Cara Delevingne won a surfboard. So did Liars who are Pretty. Ellen won also, and it was her seventh anniversary with Portia on that night and she gave the sweetest speech about being chosen and also being different.
https://youtu.be/VNeggYRqLng
A brand new season of The Ellen Show lands on September 8th, and her guests the first week are: Hillary Clinton, Caitlyn Jenner, and Malala Yousafzai!
+ Maybe Xena is coming back, after all? I can’t take this anymore! Just tell me something real, NBC!
+ The Real Housewives of Atlanta has added its first transgender cast member. Model Amiyah Scott will replace Nene Leakes on the upcoming season. I’m never going to watch some Real Housewives, but Nene Leakes was a marvel on Glee.
+ This is the hands down best thing I’ve read about Orange Is the New Black‘s third season: Uzo Aduba really wrote The Time Hump Chronicles!
“I don’t know if they have gone and taken it and now fleshed out the entire ‘Time Hump Chronicles,’ but when we were shooting it… those pages that were walking around, that you are watching in the scene, is the story,” Aduba said. “That is actually, legitimately, a story that I had to take home with me. They were like, ‘Put it in Suzanne’s words. How would Suzanne write this if she were to write this?’ That’s my handwriting, all of it. I put it out. I was crossing out things, just how I would imagine trying to pen this story. I was crossing things out and drawing because it’s supposed to be illustrated and drawing pictures… I don’t know where I was going with that stuff, but I was like, we are just going to let your imagination go.”
So when you see a woman in Litchfield — prisoner or guard — enjoying herself thoroughly while reading “The Time Hump Chronicles,” know that it’s because Aduba herself wrote each page by hand, in character. Making this story about a woman trapped between loves — including one with two, um, “instruments” — all the more personal.
WHAT! That is so amazing.
Julia Nunes has released a video for “Something Bad” from her upcoming Some Feelings LP. It’s one of the most adorable things I’ve ever seen.
+ Cara Delevingne is speaking out about sex harassment and the dangers of body image in the fashion industry. In an interview with The Times, she said:
“I was, like, fight and flight for months. Just constantly on edge. It is a mental thing as well because if you hate yourself and your body and the way you look, it just gets worse and worse … I am a bit of a feminist and it makes me feel sick. It’s horrible and it’s disgusting. [We’re talking about] young girls. You start when you are really young and you do, you get subjected to … not great stuff.”
+ Rosie O’Donnell‘s daughter, Chelsea, was missing this week but now she has been found. I’m telling you this because it has been trending on Facebook for 48 hours and I was worried but now I am not worried. She disappeared with her dog and didn’t have her medicines!
+ Kristen Stewart and Jane Lynch were not straight together on Live! With Kelly and Michael on Monday. This video is pretty amazing. Michael Strahan keeps trying to get in on the conversation and failing.
https://youtu.be/P2FOPeZf75Q
+ Remember how much everyone looooved Hannah Montana? Well, Miley Cyrus hated it.
“From the time I was 11, it was, ‘You’re a pop star! That means you have to be blonde, and you have to have long hair, and you have to put on some glittery tight thing.’ Meanwhile, I’m this fragile little girl playing a 16-year-old in a wig and a ton of makeup. It was like Toddlers & Tiaras. I had fucking flippers.”
“I was told for so long what a girl is supposed to be from being on that show. I was made to look like someone that I wasn’t, which probably caused some body dysmorphia because I had been made pretty every day for so long, and then when I wasn’t on that show, it was like, Who the fuck am I?”
+ Megan Rapinoe was voted to the USWNT all-star squad.
+ Caitlyn Jenner covers Vanity Fair‘s special Trans America issue.
The issue also features Renée Richards, Chaz Bono, and Laverne Cox, and Andreja Pejic.
Welcome back to No Filter, a weekly journey into the annals of celesbian Instagram, where dreams come true. This week, Ruby Rose hits the slip’n’slide and didn’t even make one joke about the Crocodile Mile. Additionally, Kate Moennig hit the high seas in search of adventure. Remember when we called her the great white whale of this queer ocean and reader Kathryn made this incredible graphic? No? Well it’s been a big week over here. Evan Rachel Wood still doesn’t have a public Instagram. Here we go.
https://instagram.com/p/6dABFzGFWK/
Sara Quin upset the balance of the universe by bringing home this adorable kitten and posting this horrifying photo of her current (amazing) cat staring it down. We can’t see Holiday’s expression, but if I may venture a guess…

Just Jamie Clayton and Freema Agyeman babe-in’ around. I guess Jamie Clayton is dating Keanu Reeves? Whoa.
Everybody from OITNB is sitting around enjoying their lattes but Kate Mulgrew keeps popping in to insist she had NOTHING TO DO with the preparation of their coffee, do you hear me?! There is not a single PIECE of my soul in your pumpkin spice.

No matter what you’re up to today, rest assured that Ruby Rose is having a better time than you.
Somebody took Kate Moennig out of the park and put her on a boat with comedian Nicol Paone and this is what happened.

Miley Cyrus’ kitten and I have matching hangovers.
It seemed important to include this.
Just think – if you live in Brooklyn, you could take Ellen Page home and cuddle with her forever. Look at that smile!
Oh look, it’s Lily Tomlin casually taking over the world.
Just a sneak peak behind the scenes for ya.

This hardly counts as fluff, but I feel like I have to include it – it’s so lovely to see Janelle Monáe performing “Hell You Talmbout” and getting her message out in such a powerful way. She’s incredible.
Join us next week, when Miley Cyrus’ kitten takes Sara Quin’s kitten out on the town and introduces him to a world of debauchery.
Welcome to your very special one-of-a-kind Pop Culture Fix, a weekly love affair where we catch you up on all the relevant pop culture news of the day.
Today is quite a day because Pretty Little Liars came out as transphobic and Kristen Stewart came out as “not straight,” and both of those items will be addressed in a few hours in their very own posts by their respective on-staff experts: Pretty Little Liars recapper Heather Hogan and Gothip Girl Stef Schwartz.
+ There is a very important Kristen Stewart interview with Nylon Magazine making the rounds today in which K-Stew is the most candid she has ever been about her sexual fluidity. Stay tuned for the full report from Gothip Girl later today!
+ Miley Cyrus is on the cover of Marie Claire, talking about things and stuff:
As she opens her front door, Cyrus’ dogs circle around her ankles, barking excitedly. Like her studio, her home is hospitable and unaffected—there is nothing to suggest global superstar celebrity. There is, however, a 5-foot-tall embellished bong and a dildo covered in pink and red puffballs, art projects of Cyrus, though, she emphasizes, “The bong works.”
The full interview isn’t online yet, but some snippets are, like this one about why she started The Happy Hippie Foundation:
A lot of us are born into some shit, you know what I mean? Lately, I’ve been talking a lot about my being gender-fluid and gender-neutral. And some people snarl at that. They want to judge me. People need more conventional role models, I guess. But I just don’t care to be that person.
+ Sarah Silverman will return for a three-episode arc in Season Three of Masters of Sex, and her storyline will feature Betty and Helen trying to start a family. Show creator Michelle Ashford:
“We have a great story. Helen decides she really wants to have a baby and so it’s about what did gay women do in 1966 if they wanted to have a baby. It’s like seeing the very very beginnings of that movement when gay couples decided to have children. It’s really touching. She’s determined. She wants to have a baby and they want to stay together.”
+ Faking It comes back August 31st and we’ve got the scoop.
+ Patti Smith’s book “Just Kids” will be a Showtime mini-series.
+ The Lion King sequel will be a TV series.
+ Jennifer Nettles will play Dolly Parton’s Mom in “A Coat of Many Colors”
+ Beetlejuice will have a sequel.
+ The Jem & The Holograms movie has a new trailer.
+ Annabeth Gish will be part of The X-Files reboot.
+ Britney Spears will guest star on Jane the Virgin.
+ The Twin Peaks revival will debut in 2016 or maybe in 2017.
+ Lily Rabe will play lesbian serial killer Aileen Wournos on American Horror Story: Hotel.
+ BET is developing a New Edition mini-series.
+ Fox Searchlight is probably working with the BBC on an Absolutely Fabulous movie.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hnYcRuc9S1E
+ TV Execs wanted to whitewash Awkward Black Girl but Issa Rae shut that down.
+ I was very unimpressed with how Donald Trump’s jab at Rosie O’Donnell was received. So was Chely Wright, who took to Facebook to talk about it:
Nearly ALL 5,000 people allowed this man– who aspires to be the leader of OUR America– to publicly bully, mock, attack Rosie O’Donnell (again– he’s been doing it for a decade and it’s bothered me for as long), but they cheered him on as he did it.
Wright also linked to a Huffington Post article by Elizabeth Birch outlining just some of the work Rosie has done over the years:
When I came to work with her, I could not have imagined all she had quietly done in her then short career to help people in need. By 2005, she had already contributed well over $60,000,000 to charities focused on the health and well being of children. Through her own charity, the For All Kids Foundation, she contributed millions in capital grants to hundreds of day care centers all of the country serving low income children. This was not someone else’s money nor leveraging her celebrity. This was investing her own hard earned cash. And her generosity began well before she hit pay dirt on the Rosie O’Donnell Show.
Birch details the work Rosie did after Katrina, the work she’s done with Rosie’s Broadway Kids foundation, and so much more.
+ Naya Rivera did a pregnancy photoshoot and talked to Yahoo! about pregnancy and internet trolls.
+ Vulture spent a day at the office with out actress Lily Tomlin and talked about her career, Grace & Frankie and her upcoming film, Grandma, in which she plays “a semi-retired gay professor and poet.”
+ Eight female showrunners from the CW did a panel at TCA about being women in the television industry and it was pretty cool:
Sometimes you’re on other staffs of other shows or you’re not the showrunner and you have to do a rape storyline and you don’t want to do it. People are going to be watching it and they’re going to see your name on the episode and they’re going to think you think that’s what it means. Like, this is your interpretation of what it feels like to be a female and suffer this — and it’s not. It’s your own staff of the show, and this is what you kind of have to write, and it’s just such a horrible position to be in as a writer, and I don’t want to put any other writer in that position

Welcome back to No Filter, the most prestigious sociological study on Autostraddle dot com. In this week’s important celebrity news, Kristen Stewart still doesn’t have an instagram account, and Kate Moennig is probably setting up a croquet set in your backyard. Let’s dive right in to see which heavily curated glimpses into the stars’ private lives the universe offered us this week!
I would be remiss if we didn’t begin No Filter with the ultimate reunion of gal pals.
Cara Delevingne just found out about reading books. It’s been a big week.
No real comment, I just thought you might like to look at this lovely picture of Ellen Page. She also went to the first-ever pride in Jamaica, because Ellen Page is an actual angel.
Laverne Cox looks like a goddamn beautiful butterfly in these sunglasses.

In which Sara cheats on her unbelievable cat with this delightful dog.
Then that dog was like “whatever” and hung out with Samira Wiley, I guess.
https://instagram.com/p/5ySxOxrmqU/
Angel Haze learned a valuable lesson about getting matching tattoos with your girlfriend of about ten minutes.
https://instagram.com/p/5a5BwBt1ym/
Generally I try to keep these to photos that happened during the current week, but Jamie Clayton’s instagram just appeared on my radar and goddamn, let’s talk about this picture with Mariah Carey.
I don’t even know where to start with this W Magazine spread of Stella Maxwell feeding cake to a glitter-covered, mostly naked Miley Cyrus, but it’s here and so are we and that’s where we’re at right now.
Gosh, who knows what Cara Delevingne might be reading next! Join us next week to find out.
Welcome back to No Filter, where we take time we could have spent thinking about philosophy or politics or how to save the last Northern white rhinos on the entire planet, and instead we puzzle over the relationship status of Cara Delevingne. We’re all very proud of ourselves. This week, Laura Jane Grace has a huge surprise for us, Tegan and Sara are giving us a big box of trash, and Miley Cyrus is doing suggestive things to a dessert food. Let’s get to it!
https://instagram.com/p/5YQk_AwTad/
Internet rumours are trying to tell me that Cara and Annie broke up recently, but that can’t be true because Cara just won the girlfriend award to end all girlfriend awards. I used to think it was Cara who’d fuck this up somehow but Annie, girl, hang onto this one. She’s a KEEPER.
Turns out Laura Jane Grace has been Beyoncé this entire time; nobody is surprised.
https://instagram.com/p/5L5SAwwzL3/
Miley Cyrus and Stella Maxwell are having a wholesome time with this delightful churro. Miley, I just want to love you; you need to stop with the cornrows.
At long last, Laverne Cox met Caitlyn Jenner.
At long last, Laverne Cox met this dinosaur.
Just Ellen Page snuggling a dog.

If you were very, very fast, you could have picked up a bunch of priceless Milo and Otis VHS tapes and discarded Ace of Base albums. Cannot imagine the joy of whatever nerds biked over there fast enough to sort through these treasures.
Samira and Lauren being the best humans, hands down.
Join us next week, when Miley Cyrus hosts a garage sale full of pizza sheets, glitter shakers, discarded kittens and gold leaf rolling papers.
Welcome back to No Filter, a weekly celebration of famous people’s pets. This week in People Who Don’t Have Instagram, Evan Rachel Wood sang Alanis Morissette in her basement (it’s fine, everything’s fine). As far as we can tell, everybody else on the internet was busy celebrating Leisha Hailey’s birthday, whether they were conscious of it or not. You were too.
Poussey and Soso are back at it, shooting season 4 of Orange Is The New Black. When do we get to a place where I can write something spoiler-y about season 3 without one of you murdering me? What are you guys even doing here if you haven’t finished the season? Get to work.
https://instagram.com/p/5FR6RdMNs-/
Andreja Pejić is living my actual dream life right now.
Or maybe it’s Miley Cyrus and Stella Maxwell, who rode their dinosaurs into town to pick up an extra tub of glitter and a six-pack.
Did you ever wonder what Kate Moennig would bring to the picnic you two would have together? Now you know – cigarettes, popcorn, mini-muffins and salsa. At least that’s what she (or maybe Camila Grey) brought to Leisha Hailey’s birthday party. Notably absent: yoplait.
In thumbnail form, I thought Leisha was standing next to a very large kite that she was super excited to have received for her birthday – but no, it’s this very pretty stained glass piece. Perhaps she’d like a kite next year.
Usually I like to include pictures of people or animals, but I have stopped by the bodega and bought a peach every single day this week because I can’t stop thinking about this picture of Lauren Morelli’s peaches. Not a euphemism.

Carrie Brownstein is back on the set of Transparent as Syd, the only voice of reason in a sea of characters who are mostly awful human beings.

Brittani Nichols is acting awfully suspicious.

I cannot get over the perpetual look on this cat’s face, as though it had just walked in on its parents having sex and can never unsee what it has seen. What secrets does this cat know?
Join us next week, when we’ll find out what other life-size reproductions Miley and Stella climb on top of.
Hello, underwater dinosaurs (scubasaurs rex?)! I’m sorry your Pop Culture Fix is later than usual this week; I’m traveling today to meet up with the other senior staff to make big plans to love you even better than we already do, which is a lot! On the plus side (for me), I am now sitting next to Yvonne at Los Angeles International Airport. Her face is even sweeter in person, which I know seems impossible, but it’s true.
Yes, we are going to continue to talk about the USWNT winning the World Cup because it’s a big damn deal. They’re getting a ticker-tape parade in New York City tomorrow. They’re the first non-NYC based team and first women’s sports team to be honored with a ticker-tape parade! Also, did you know the gender pay gap applies to women’s sports too?
The total payout for the Women’s World Cup this year will be $15 million, compared with the total for the men’s World Cup last year of $576 million, nearly 40 times as much. That also means that the Women’s World Cup payout is less than the reported $24 million to $35 million FIFA spent on its self-aggrandizing fiction film, United Passions.
Meanwhile, 43.2 million people watched the U.S. vs. Japan game on Sunday night, shattering the record the men’s team set during last year’s World Cup. They raked in 18 million viewers, less than half the number of people who tuned in to watch the USWNT play.
Here’s yesterday’s celebration in Los Angeles.

Damn, I’m getting all choked up all over again. (They’re chanting “I believe that we just won!”)
+ The Good Wife is bringing on a white guy to replace bisexual badass PI/woman of color Kalinda Sharma. “Replace.”
+ Vulture looks at Orange Is the New Black, Fresh of the Boat, Community, Parks and Recreation, and Hannibal and wonders if Asian immigrants are finally starting to get some respect on American TV.
Chang’s story line is a small improvement in the way that Asian-Americans are represented onscreen. She’s a recovery of the Asian immigrant, the one who was cast out in the name of political correctness. Chang isn’t simply a first-generation immigrant, she’s one who doesn’t care to fit into the mainstream. So for a brief moment, you get a glimpse of a character who is suggestive of another world that doesn’t center around whiteness. You might not be quite sure what’s going on, and that’s the point: She’s not here for you.
Pair with the thoughts some of our Asian writers shared about Chang’s OITNB episode in our 306 recap roundtable.
+ Miley Cyrus is a cartoon bird.
http://www.hulu.com/watch/814777
+ It’s looking less and less likely that a streaming platform is going to pick up Hannibal now that NBC has pulled the plug. Stef and my girlfriend are heartbroken, y’all. And probably poor old Margot too. She’s finally getting to snog a lady this season!
+ Ruby Rose is guest starring on Syfy’s freshman series Dark Matter. I know this because I received five — literally FIVE — press releases telling me about it yesterday.
According to the press releases: “In the episode airing Friday, July 24th at 10pm ET/PT, Aussie actress Rose will guest star as Wendy, a hauntingly beautiful entertainment android who dazzles the crew with her sexual prowess and knack for entertaining … until things take a dangerous turn.”
Entertainment android! What! What does that even mean!
+ Fox is making a movie about the SCOTUS same-sex marriage ruling, obviously.
+ I mentioned it in this week’s Boob(s On Your) Tube, but I want to say it again: Marisa Tomei is joining Empire next season to play a lesbian billionaire. She’s also going to play Aunt May in the new Spider-Man movie, which is ridiculous because she’s only 50 years old, but also: I hope they make Aunt May gay af. It’s time for a new origin story.
+ Ellen Page is going to be in a new movie about Lance Corporal Leslie Martz. In real life, Martz “was sent to Afghanistan as a leader of a Female Engagement Team and tasked with the dual mandate of gaining the trust of Afghan women by equipping them with necessary skills for independence but also secretly extracting information from them about their Taliban husbands.”
The movie is called Lioness, which reminds me that I wanted to tell you about this HORRIBLE tweet that welcomed the England National Team home from the Women’s World Cup. Look at this shit:
That belongs in post-World War II home front propaganda book. (Obviously, the tweet has been deleted.)
+ Stef (who has a starring role in this week’s Pop Culture Fix, have you noticed?) is going to talk to you some more about this later, but Alexis Bledel and Katherine Heigl are playing lesbian lovers in a new movie called Jenny’s Wedding.
Oh, Rory, just go home to Paris Geller, the love of my your life.
+ This is an excellent essay from a female producer about four ways women get the shaft in Hollywood.
+ The final Hunger Games character posters are here and … weird. KISS & the Mockingjays?

Melissa McCarthy, duh.
Although Gothip Girl has speculated about the state of Miley Cyrus‘ relationship with Victoria’s Secret model Stella Maxwell in the past, we previously determined that the two were more than likely just very good friends. Turns out, they’re such good friends that they swap spit in darkened parking lots outside Hollywood steakhouses, as seen in this video from the highbrow creepster offices of TMZ. We could show you that but instead we’ll show you this picture they took of themselves consensually:
So far no anonymous sources close to the pair have come forwards to confidentially tell a reliable tabloid publication about how absolutely smitten they are with each other or all the reasons why they’re a good match, as per proper Hollywood etiquette. In my imagination, a close friend tells Gothip Girl that the Belgian-born, New Zealand-based model has really put a smile on Miley Cyrus’ face, and that the two are having a blast together. Then the friend gives me a high five and twenty bucks before thanking me for our continued altruistic journalism and our focus on the issues that really matter to readers everywhere.
This has been a big year for Miley Cyrus; she announced in an interview that she’d had significant relationships with women, and also that she didn’t care to define her gender by binary terms. She also launched the Happy Hippie Foundation, whose website declares, “Our mission is to rally young people to fight injustice facing homeless youth, LGBTQ youth and other vulnerable populations.”
Her Instagram has been filled recently with stories of trans and non-binary people whose stories Miley finds inspiring, which helps promote awareness of LGBTQ issues to her 23.4 million followers.

Welcome back to No Filter, a weekly column where we dissect frogs. Just kidding, we dissect heavily curated photos posted by celebrities on the internet, because we lead very full lives. This week in important celebrity news, Evan Rachel Wood had her tonsils out and retweeted a lot of wise quotes from the Lion King. In my imagination where we hang out all the time, she’s all loopy on pain meds like Abbi in Broad City, leading her to tweet amazing things like this:

Hot damn.

Rumours abound that Miley Cyrus has been gal pal-ing around with model Stella Maxwell, although this reporter finds this gossip to be dubious at best. We’ve also heard that Miley is possibly staking out bars in Brooklyn, prowling for women (and we like that story better, so we’re sticking to it).
OMG, look at all these people who look like Samira Wiley in one place.
This week we allowed these weirdos to join us in No Filter, as Eli is a Very Important Dog, dressed for a Very Important Gala.
https://instagram.com/p/4QCqMeRdr5/
Solidarity for Janet Mock and the endless struggle against crazy humidity hair.

St Vincent faced another struggle entirely.
Join us next week, when the Anointed Movers will help us all U-Haul into Miley Cyrus’ house, probably.

In her latest social media partnership, Miley Cyrus and the Happy Hippie Foundation have teamed up with Instagram to create #Instapride. Throughout the next two weeks, the campaign will share the photos and stories of “transgender and gender expansive people from around the country.”
via The Happy Hippie Foundation
Miley recently came out as various non-specifically-labeled types of queer with regard to her gender and sexuality and launched Happy Hippie, a foundation dedicated to serving homeless and LGBT youth. #Instapride has already garnered a huge response on Instagram — and has already started telling stories, beginning with trans man Leo Sheng. It is pretty amazing to consider that Miley is deliberately putting trans stories and nonbinary stories in front of more than 22 million Instagram followers, not to mention all the other ways she has to reach wide audiences.
Leo wrote on Instagram that sharing his story of transition has been important to him, and he was excited to do so more broadly through #Instapride.
It was run and shot by Miley herself, and showcased stories of trans and gender-fluid Instagrammers from around the country. I can’t remember the last time I’ve been in a room with so much love, pride, and respect for everyone’s journeys. It was such a privilege to be included and I’m so humbled to be a part of something so special and beautiful. I hope that I can inspire those who have the ability to share their own stories to find their own voices.
Miley is an imperfect celebrity advocate with a splotchy history of racism and cultural appropriation that she has never apologized for. However, this campaign, at least in its first hours, seems seriously groundbreaking in scope and wonderfully positive in its approach.
And, in an exclusive with Time (which discredits her membership in the community by calling her an ally and deadnames Caitlyn Jenner and is generally Time-ish, but I digress) it seems like Miley is learning to acknowledge and leverage her privilege.
“In places like Indianapolis, you can tell someone that if they’re trans or gay they can’t use your public bathroom, Cyrus says, referencing the “religious freedom law passed earlier this year that has since been rolled back. “No matter what I’d do, I’d probably be allowed to go in there. Because they’re starfuckers. And these people are real people. I don’t want to be anywhere they can’t be.”
Getting trans and non-binary people’s stories out in the world and in front of a huge audience fits into Happy Hippie’s goal of amplifying youth voices to help eliminate prejudice and keep people alive and happy. And the specific focus on the T in LGBT is rare and necessary in a social campaign like this. Here’s hoping these stories reach the people who need to hear them!
Hello and welcome back to No Filter, a column about celebrities and all the various ways they eat their mashed potatoes. This time last week I was cavorting with a bunch of writers from this very website on a mountain with no wifi, pretending to be very invested in preparing for the arrival of my campers but probably wondering what Kristen Stewart was up to at that very moment. Was she thinking about me? This week, I am at sea level (or whatever) with internet access so we can pry into the lives of a lot of famous people and figure out what they ate for dinner! Let’s get to it.
Ellen Page posted this precious picture of herself (?!) with her ancient, much-beloved teddybear, although certain editors at a certain website suspect that it’s really gal pal Alia Shawkat, snuggling after an intimate slumber party. Those two!
https://instagram.com/p/3nKEMyQzLK/
I could post literally anything from Miley Cyrus’ insta every single week and it would be amazing, but this week she met this tiny horse. No clue what she’s been into the rest of the week. Sleeping on pizza sheets with her tiny kitten, I guess.
I don’t know anything about Pretty Little Liars but I defer to Heather Hogan, Keeper of Lesbian Television Secrets, to tell us what’s going on here. As far as we can tell, these humans aren’t queer at all but just really like holding each other within the soft embrace of this inflatable donut. That’s everyone’s right.
https://instagram.com/p/3mRQvEMrf3/
Jenny Owen Youngs taught Mal Blum how to play guitar on top of a mountain.
https://instagram.com/p/3nOjXTQTUu/
St. Vincent and Cara Delevingne hung out with Suki Waterhouse and probably didn’t have to spend $5 for a bottle of water like everyone else in this photograph.
https://instagram.com/p/3kUwh2pTnY/
Someone put Carmen Esposito in this closet and forgot about her, so she drank all the beer I guess?
BUT HOW DID YOU TAKE THE PICTURE?!?!?!??!
Lastly… What’s Evan Rachel Wood up to? Not signing up for Instagram? Hanging out with this guy:

Join us next week as we delve deeper into the mysteries of the universe.
Welcome back to No Filter, a weekly extravaganza in which the famous, infamous and a couple of unfamous aspirants gather together to show off their fabulous lifestyles with the help of Instagram, my absolute favourite app since Temple Run. This week, we’re celebrating kittens, boobs, pizza sheets and World Goth Day. Actually, we’re celebrating those things every day.
DeAnne Smith showed off her ripped beach body somewhere Down Under.
https://instagram.com/p/29YIrzxdpz/
Janet Mock already won this week; you can go home, it’s all over now.
https://instagram.com/p/3CijjNNB7E/
Cat Cora did this very gay thing and busted out her toolbox in the name of America.
https://instagram.com/p/3Jr8KYLjrS/
Raven-Symoné’s hair is doing some incredible things these days.
https://instagram.com/p/2-Azs9wQ54/
Ellen Page has always been like, so gay.
https://twitter.com/evanrachelwood/status/601862655939325953
Evan Rachel Wood still doesn’t have Instagram, but did commemorate World Goth Day. Perhaps next week.

Angel Haze met some boobs. Are they yours? Email us at stef at autostraddle dot com.
This kitten won Instagram this week. Her name is apparently Shanti, she lives with Miley Cyrus and they sleep together in a pizza bed. Miley Cyrus’ Instagram account is filled with its own wonders:
https://instagram.com/p/3HcUuAwzL_/
Seriously, this whole column could just be pictures of Miley and this angry kitten and I wouldn’t be upset about it.
Join us next time, when… well, who knows what might happen!??! We could all be different people by then. If there are other entertaining celebrity feeds that you feel have not been represented here, please let us know. If you are Miley Cyrus’ kitten and you would like to come live with me, please let us know.
Welcome to our second weekly intallment of No Filter. Each week, we’ll compile a collection of Instagram posts from the most important queer (or queer-ish) celebrities we can think of, and we’ll dissect said images over tea (or lemonade if you prefer). Will this be the week that Kristen and Alicia start a totally gross joint account and post simultaneous softly-lit pictures of each other from across the breakfast nook? Well, no, but there’s always next week.
Firstly, we need to address something which did not happen this week and did not happen on Instagram but is nonetheless very important to our community: recent revelations regarding Gillian Anderson and Cate Blanchett‘s sexual histories. The following photograph was taken at a time when the Internet was not what it is today, a time before ubiquitous camera phones and social media updates — a simpler time. Learning that both of these heroic ladies have spoken out about having past relationships with women validates every feeling I’ve ever had about them, which leads us to Exhibit A:
If there is even a ghost of a possibility that Galadriel and Agent Scully made out even once, the entire vapid fluff team at Autostraddle dot com are going to explode.
Anyway. Instagram!
They are just so painfully Canadian sometimes.
They’ve been singing “Pinot Noir” in their own heads ad nauseam for about a month now, like the resplendent Laverne Cox.
https://instagram.com/p/2hjJNfQqeM/
They collect snacks. Hi Kreayshawn. We see you.
https://instagram.com/p/2jC8rawzJ2/
They honor their heroes – dream date Miley Cyrus posted this clip from her backyard session with Melanie Safka, my dad’s favourite singer. Miley made headlines a couple of years back doing a cover of Safka’s “Look What They’ve Done To My Song,” but I’d be down for a clip of the two performing “Brand New Key” or even “I Don’t Eat Animals.”
While we’re at it, how fucking cute is Laura Jane Grace playing “True Trans Soul Rebel” with Miley? If you told me seven years ago that one day Miley would be singing backup on an Against Me! song, I don’t think I’d have believed you. Miley thinks Laura Jane Grace is a badass – she’s just like us.
https://instagram.com/p/2WtB3oF48y/
They have heart-eyes feelings about Danielle Brooks (Nneka Onuorah, speaking for us all).
https://instagram.com/p/2QpFvoDvCu/
They’re useless when it comes to feeding themselves. Taylor Swift, do you belong in this column? We’re putting you here. Welcome.
Join us next week, and every week for the rest of our natural lives.
