Something Awesome Project’s Party Will Actually Be Something Awesome
I trust that everyone remembers Jaime, the smoking hot lady who graced your computer screens in November? Maybe you also remember her work for the Something Awesome Project, a community-based movement to provide a safe, fun, and enriching space for queers in her home state of Connecticut. Here’s how Jaime described it for us back in November:
“Our goal is to connect GLBTQ youth with their peers, provide them with positive mentors, empower them to lead happy and healthy lives and award scholarships for those pursuing higher education. Further, we will host events to connect the adult GLBTQ community. We also have an online community where everyone can create profiles and interact with gays galore!”
Back then, they were still looking for funding. They still need your support, but they’re well on their way to providing both teens and adults with the tools and resources they need to thrive in a sometimes unwelcoming environment. Their goals include establishing a physical community center to serve as a literal safe space for GLBTQ teens and adults, which is planned to include:
- A coffee shop, which will allow the Project to maintain a degree of self-sufficiency
- Quiet areas and conference rooms to work on homework and projects
- Common areas to hang out with friends, watch TV and play games
- A computer lab, library and kitchen
- Space for live performances (art, music, poetry, open mic nights, you name it!)
They’re also working towards a one-on-one mentoring program for students and a scholarship fund for queer high school seniors who plan on pursuing higher education. If you’re interested in helping them out – and honestly, how could you possibly not be? – you could first stop by their website and donate what you can. (You can also create a little profile thing and make friends, which is neat.) But after that, if you live in New England, why don’t you think about dropping by their launch party this weekend? On Saturday January 22nd in Danbury, CT, the good people of the Something Awesome Project (including at least one foxy calendar girl) will be at the Two Steps Downtown Grille from 7 to 11. Check out live cover band The Clits, drag king and queen performances, super sweet raffle prizes, and also appetizers, duh, which I have no specific information on but am hoping include pigs-in-a-blanket and mini quiches. Come for the activism, stay for the mini quiches. That’s what I always say.

PYT & Autostraddle Threw A Calendar Release Party in LA, Took Photos
Hey we told you we were having a “Holiday Straddle“-themed PYT lesbo bash in Los Angeles, California on December 17th and guess what? WE DID. The party celebrated a) the holidays, obvs and b) the release of the 2011 Autostraddle Calendar (made possible with the help of 12 smokin’ hot models, world-famous fashion photographer Robin Roemer and stylist Sara Medd and make-up artist Christina Natale). It was so much fun, (as PYT parties always are) and so many fun people came out to dance and drink and buy calendars! The calendar girls in attendance were: Nicole Pacent (June), Sarah Croce (April), Romi Klinger (December) and Laura (August!)
Charlene made us an AWESOME Autostraddle mural (she cut the stencil and spray painted the whole damn thing herself!) obvs DJ Saratonin provided the dance party soundtrack, and amazing photographer Abz Cruz is responsible for the memories below (as well as any and every photo that comes from PYT), and we really wouldn’t have it any other way.

When Alison wrote to me and told me she’s a big fan of Agent Provacateur, I knew we’d get along. She came up from DC for the weekend, saw some friends, and came over for an Autostraddle photoshoot. Sarah’s a rugby player, an actress, and an all around blast to hang out with. I actually photographed Sarah once before when she was doing the Logo/Levis Unbuttoned campaign. So, Sarah and her crazy abs are no stranger to the lens. I was glad when she contacted us to be an Autostraddle Calendar Girl and thought everyone else might be to!

Robin: Carmen is a comic so we knew right away she would be so much fun to work with. Who doesn’t love a funny girl? My style team and I decided that for March we’d do something bright, because we basically can’t wait for spring. Carmen’s smile is so infectious, we just smiled and laughed our way through the shoot. In addition to being naturally gorgeous, Carmen has a great personality and is super animated making her super easy to photograph. Thanks to Ashlee for letting us use her fabulous apartment! Thanks to Carmen for taking direction so well! Thanks to Christina for the wonderful make-up once again and to Sara for dressing Carmen in bright and sexy threads.

All About Carmen: Carmen is an Ohio native and Marymount Manhattan grad who does stand-up comedy all over the city.
Carmen also enjoys eating pizza, reading, sleeping to dream, and writing a lot. Other passions include “erotic looking/tasting fruit,” Zen, truth, fishing, sweet wine, brunch, the color turquoise and fantasising about one day getting to do paintballing. Until her paint-balling dreams are realized, Carmen has settled for lazer-tag and other activities that spark & delight her youthful soul.

Miss January
Jennifer is an up-and-coming New York City entertainer you may recall from the all-lady comedy troupe Candy Slice. In addition to writing, directing and starring in a lot of shorts, she’s appeared in many indie films as well as primetime network shows like CSI and Law & Order.
Robin says: Jennifer is probably the girl I’ve photographed the most over the past few years. She’s one of my little muses. Whenever I have a project where I need a model, I think of her right away. The thing I like about Jennifer’s look is that you can’t really categorize her into one “type” and her features are both dramatic and naturally beautiful. Because she’s an actress, she’s totally comfortable being in front of the lens. Plus, she’s a sweetheart and so easy to work with.
