Crystal Bowersox is Bisexual: American Idol Singer Literally Comes Out For Christmas

Singer Crystal Bowersox recently confirmed on Twitter that she’s on Team Queer!

You may remember Crystal Bowersox from Season bajillion of American Idol (or season 9, which is randomly the only season of American Idol I ever watched because Ellen was on it) where she was the spunky dreadlocked girl with a raspy voice that everyone kept comparing to Janis Joplin. She was runner-up, but that’s okay because whatever happened to the winner of Season 9 anyway? Since Idol, Crystal she has released two albums, The Farmer’s Daughter and All That For This, which Wikipedia tells me had moderate success.

But now Crystal has come out with a new Christmas single (every pun intended)! It’s about coming out for Christmas, as you may have inferred. She recently appeared on Good Day LA sans signature dreadlocks (it’s a good look) and said that she has been bisexual for as long as she can remember. Here’s her new single, aptly titled “Coming Out For Christmas“:

Eh, it’s not bad, you know? As underwhelmed I am feeling about the single, I’m still excited to know she’s making music to empower LGBTQ kids to come out to their families. She said of the single, which was co-written with Maia Sharp,

The holidays are here, and it pains me to think that anyone would be left alone or be forbidden to be with their family over something as silly as their sexual orientation. I hope it will serve as a holiday anthem for people who may finally have the courage to live their life as their true authentic self, proudly and unapologetically, and that their friends and family will love and accept them with loving open arms. May we all celebrate this holiday season together, celebrate equality, and give thanks for the true spirit of Christmas- with our one human family.

Some of the proceeds from the sale of “Coming Out For Christmas” will benefit The Trevor Project. You can buy the single on iTunes!

  1. i actually worked with her very briefly before she was on american idol. she was SUPER ADORABLE and SUPER OBVIOUSLY TALENTED; this is so cute and awesome!!

(i actually can’t remember if i already knew she was bi or not, mostly because there was a lesbian couple who also worked with us and i was too busy wanting to make out with/be both of them)

  2. She was basically the only thing that I cared about in her season of American Idol (hers was actually the last season I watched and semi-enjoyed) so I am kind of really excited about this.

  3. SHE USED THE WORD. The label-less folks are great, but as someone who identifies as THE WORD, it’s pretty awesome to hear someone else label themselves that way, too. Yay!

    • I was thinking the same thing. I loved Maria Bello’s piece and Tom Daley’s video was adorable, but it’s nice to hear people identify as bisexual.

  4. hooray for bisexual visibility! but hey i knew it, hee.. hee.. anyway, I read somewhere that janis was kinda bi too.

  5. OMG I had such a big crush on her when she was on AI!!! good to know it wasn’t totally in vain. Although I also had a crush on Clay Aiken in 9th grade…

  6. There needs to be a queer American Idol runner-ups support group headed by Adam Lambert and Crystal Bowersox

  7. I like the sentiment, I can’t say the song is going to go into heavy rotation or anything.

also I like the new haircut even though I had no idea who this person was until I read this article so THANKS HANSEN
